THINK is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by TB and HIV/AIDS.  As a health delivery and research organisation, THINK engages with the local community, government consortia, and international funders to provide care for over 100,000 people in KwaZulu-Natal Province and carries out cutting-edge clinical research that has already contributed to changing TB Treatment Guidelines internationally and locally.

Reporting to the TB Technical Team Leader, the NIMDR trained nurse will support the teams working on DR-TB patients at Appelsbosch Hospital, a decentralised DR-TB unit, with the management and monitoring of individuals initiated on DR-TB regimens within the uMgungundlovu District, KwaZulu-Natal Province. The aim of the USAID SAFT Project is to safeguard advances of TB treatment by strengthening the MDR TB health care platform in the uMgungundlovu District.  The NIMDR trained nurse will be primarily based at Appelsbosch Hospital but support other DR TB decentralised units if required.

Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Provide on-site support and mentorship to the DR-TB teams at Appelsbosch Hospital; ensuring pre- initiation investigations, assist with ongoing monitoring of patients and co-ordination of clinical care with other health professionals, advice on management of SEs and identification of patients that require referral
  • Provide support to nursing staff for management and coordination of DR TB services at the hospital and related referral sites
  • Assist with ongoing training on DRTB guidelines provided by the USAID SAFT training team
  • Work closely with the hospital team to assist with ensuring clinical systems, protocols, and procedures are established and implemented
  • Collect relevant project related data
  • Assist with implementation of monitoring framework developed by the USAID SAFT M&E team
  • Ensure data quality and efficient data collection from site level, including oversight of entry of patient data onto EDR and TIER.net
  • Guide programme staff in the development, implementation and measuring of Quality I initiatives
  • Interact with and provide feedback with relevant stakeholders
  • Willing to travel between health care facilities within uMgungundlovu District as well as travel to SAFT Programme Office in Hilton
  • Perform other duties as required

Requirements

  • Registered Professional Nurse with a Diploma/ Degree in nursing
  • Minimum 2-3 years working experience managing patients with drug- resistant tuberculosis
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
  • Additional experience managing patients who are co-infected with HIV
  • Strong IT skills with knowledge of MS Office software packages
  • Preference to have experience working in EDR and Tier. Net systems
  • Good verbal communication and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Previous experience working with stakeholders
  • Valid Code 08 Drivers licence
