David Blyth
Chairperson

David was appointed MD of Enterprise IG Johannesburg (now The Brand Union) in September 2005 and is responsible for the operational delivery of all strategy & design work across Africa. As a brand strategy specialist, he leads a world-class team of designers and consultants across brand strategy, corporate identity, packaging, retail interiors and architecture projects.

Design’s ability to make a positive impact on society and people’s lives, while at the same time delivering positive business results drives his approach and work ethic. David’s personal interest for consumer psychology, marketing communication and design has involved extensive working partnerships with passionate creative people.

David started his career in the advertising business as an Account Executive at Grey. Over time he moved into the role of Strategic Planning Manager and worked on many multinational accounts including BAT, Bristol Myers, Mars/Masterfoods, Mazda and Procter & Gamble before moving to FCB as Account Planning Manager. David joined a TBWA start-up tool® in 1995 as Planning Director and helped build the business to top 5 on the creative awards table with 40 people and blue-chip Clients like BMW, GlaxoSmithKline and Microsoft. David subsequently spent time in the marketing technology industry as MD and CEO of Tinderbox followed by a corporate stint at De Beers managing a strategic project across London and Johannesburg offices.

David was born in Johannesburg, but grew up on the East Coast of South Africa. He has an Honours Degree in Strategic Marketing and Business Economics. David enjoys family time with his family Tracey, Meg and Gaby. Spare time usually involves sports, cooking and reading anything related to consumer behaviour.

Glenda Venn
Vice Chairperson

Glenda Venn has worked within a number of agencies as Creative Director for Below the Line, Through the Line and Design units. Whilst buying the office kettle for a new agency branch she realized that she really should start her own company. Seven years later It’s a Go! is going fine and has won awards and clients. It has also lost awards and clients. But it has got a nice coffee machine.

Bradley Kirshenbaum

Bradley Kirshenbaum received his Bachelor of Design from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem in 1992. Following his return to South Africa he worked at Gitam BBDO in Johannesburg for three years. In 1998 he joined Blue Moon to set up their design department. Now one of the partners in the company, he is their design director and works on their major accounts including Edcon, Discovery, Volkswagen and The SA Music Awards. He also designs the local t-shirt range Love Jozi. His design work has been published locally and internationally and has been recognised at The Loerie Awards, The London International Advertising Awards and The New York Festivals.

Blue Moon is a communications company specializing in strategic internal and external communication campaigns that engage audiences on a sustainable level. Over 18 years they have mastered their core competencies of design, video, theatre and events, and in the process, the key competency of strategic planning.

Garth Walker
Durban Chairperson
Garth trained as a graphic designer at Technikon Natal in the mid 70's. He went solo in 1995 by starting Orange Juice Design in Durban.

His real passion is vernacular graphic design from South Africa's streets and townships. The creativity of ordinary South Africans inspires much of his work. In 1995 Garth published Issue #1 of OJ's studio magazine "i-jusi" (Zulu for juice) which continues to promote, educate and encourage a local design language rooted in the South African experience.

Garth is a member of British D&AD, Type Directors Club, The St Moritz Design Summit and the is only African invited to membership of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale)

Kassie Naidoo

Kassie is creative director and a director of KingJames RSVP, the design and promotions agency of  the KingJames Group in Johannesburg. She studied graphic design at ML Sultan Technikon in Kwazulu Natal before moving up to Johannesburg. Her first 11 working years were spent in publishing, working various local and international magazine titles. Her jump to advertising was made in 2000 when she joined FCB Johannesburg as group head, a year later becoming design director on the Edgars account. She joined TBWA/Gavin/Reddy in 2001 as creative director on Ymag and later headed up the design team.

Mohammed Jogie
Mohammed Jogie studied Fine Art at the University of Durban Westville and Graphic Design at the Vaal Triangle Technikon. Wanting a more South African angle to his work, he took a certificate course at Funda Community College in Soweto. He has done a number of short courses in management and design software. Mohammed cut his teeth by working as an assistant to cartoonist Vella Padayachee before moving onto struggle newspaper "The Indicator" where he came through with top honours on their media training programme. He then embarked on a design consultancy before moving onto an in-house design division of the Premiere Group. In the nineties, he art directed magazines before starting his design company Morning Star Design. He also worked as a design and software apps trainer. Mohammed is a practising designer and works for Adobe looking after marketing, PR and creative pro products in Africa, the Middle East and Indian Ocean Islands.

Desiree Brown

Desiree Brown is Creative Director at Rednail and a wordsmith by trade - awarded at Cannes, One Show, D & AD, The Loeries and other major awards in the advertising and design arena. But her real passion is for using creative talent to seek more than just fame, fun and fortune. Applied constructively, creativity with a conscience can change the world for good and projects like 26 Letters demonstrates her passionate belief. As a bit of trivia, currently Desiree is also writing another children's story for her other passion - her internet publishing company. The book is entitled "How To Become A Handbag and Still Be Happy."

Sean Harrison
Western Cape Chairperson
Sean is Creative Director and Chief Executive Officer of Code (a Company of Designers), which he founded in 1999. An Honours graduate in Graphic Design, he has 17 years experience in brand building.

Sean has won several national and international awards, along with being an International judge for the Cannes Awards and the 2003 Chairperson for the Loerie Design Awards

Gary Harwood


As a director of HKLM (Harwood Kirsten Leigh McCoy), Gary is a prominent figure in the branding and design arena. His industry career spans 20 years and his expertise is centered around multidisciplinary design and brand strategy.

After obtaining his diploma at Wits Technikon, Gary started working for KSDP Pentagraph (later Enterprise IG) where he worked his way up to the position of Executive Creative Director for Africa and the Middle East. His major projects include Barloworld, Investec, Southern Sun, First National Bank, Rand Merchant Bank, Nedbank, Wrigleys, Singita, Exxaro, Wests, Standard Bank, Prudential, Conoil, Globacom, Equitorial Trust Bank, Devcom Bank, Rainbownet, Bank PHB, Gama Civic, M-Cel, Dubai Festival City,

Gary is a regular contributor of branding related opinion pieces in industry publications and the media, including radio and television. He was Chairman of  think from 2005 – 2007.

He has received awards for his work at the Loeries, Spadas, Clios, London International and Design Week Effectiveness. Gary was the recipient of The University of Johannesburg 2005 Alumni Dignitas Award. He is a regular speaker at various conferences, colleges and institutions and currently sits on the Advisory Council of The University of Johannesburg (Graphic Design Department) and serves on the Board of Governors of the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography.

Gaby de Abreu

As the co-founder and executive Creative Director of one of South Africa’s foremost multi-disciplinary brand consultancies, Gaby de Abreu’s career spans nearly two decades.
 
After studying Graphic Design at Wits Technikon, he joined KSDP Pentagraph, now known as Enterprise IG, in 1989. Eight years later, he was appointed Creative Director and in 2000 established the Switch Group with his present-day business partners.
 
Gaby has worked in the financial services, FMCG, pharmaceutical, hospitality, industrial, and sport and leisure sectors, handling high-profile projects for global and local brands, like The Coca-Cola Company, VW Audi, Kimberly Clark, Famous Brands, Brandhouse, National Brands, Aspen Pharmacare, SA Rugby, Investec, Clover SA, Cape Town Routes Unlimited, Johannesburg Securities Exchange and ABSA, among others.
 
His talent has been recognised at the Loeries, the New York Clios and the London Advertising Awards. He was vice-chairman of Think from 2005 - 2007, sits on the Johannesburg University’s advisory board, and actively contributes to the industry by dedicating time and resources to developing and advising aspirant designers.

Jacques Lange


Jacques Lange is past president (2005-2007) of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) and co-chair of the International Design Alliance (IDA). He is a steering committee member of the SABS Design Institute's Design Achievers Awards, advisory committee member of the academic journal, Image & Text and a director of the Icograda Foundation. In addition, he is an advisor to various governmental, education and non-governmental institutions.

Jacques qualified with a degree in Information Design from the University of Pretoria after which he gained professional experience in the theatre and television industries before joining the Tshwane-based visual communication consultancy Bluprint Design in 1990 where he is partner and creative director. The company's services spans the fields of communication strategy, branding, event management and media liaison.

Throughout his career, Jacques has actively engaged in the fields of design practice, profession management, education, research, design promotion and policy advocacy. His professional output as a designer has earned him many industry awards and his work has been featured in numerous publications and exhibitions locally and internationally. In addition, Jacques is an experienced industry juror and a prolific writer and speaker on design issues.
